Found in the Blécherette free library, where I was amused to see some of my own books released many months ago.

A lyrical letter to his mother from a Vietnamese/American man. At times almost unbearably sensual and intimate, at others distressing. I knew what was coming for the monkey scene, as a friend had witnessed the practice in Thailand, so I was prepared, but I can imagine that some readers would be shocked.
I'm not 100% convinced by the inclusion of many references to Tiger Woods, mainly there, I think, for ethnic comparisons, not for the golfing, but then there are many other references to Miles Davis, Etta James, books such as Sula, Barthes, and others. but the main threads are the memories of relationships with his mother Rose, grandmother Lan, teenage friend and companion Trevor.

Excellent writing from someone who is not of English mother tongue; not sure about the word "instinctually" which appears twice in pages quite close together.
