The Quarry

Having previously read Iain Banks' 'The Wasp Factory', 'A Song of Stone' and a couple of his Culture novels, I was nervous about what lay in this novel. However, it turns out to be very tame by comparison. I was almost disappointed!
It's interesting that most of the professional reviews I've read for The Quarry focus on Guy and his cancer, whereas for me Kit was a far more interesting character. I really liked his narration throughout. Guy's unkindness and ranting was less to my taste. Some of the other characters such as Paul, Ali and Rob could have been better developed. They came across as stereotypes, but Hol was good fun at least.
Plotwise, there was great build-up but I was a bit disappointed by how it turned out. The ending was nice in a way, but somewhat flat in my opinion.

No one else picked this up so I did even although it seemed familiar. Now I've looked at my reading list, I have read it, but to be completely honest I don't remember much about it. It was away back in 2014 before I kept reviews of borrowed books so can't remind myself any more that the blurb on the back but that's not a good sign as to my enjoyment of it.
