Narrative voice in this novel includes three sections (Predators, Moth Love, and Old Chestnuts) that eventually come together, with one surprise narrative at the end. Each section is about one person's story in Zebulon County; they seem to be unrelated at first. Then the names and the connections begin to touch each other, at least on the edges.
This novel's narrative structure recapitulates the content in that each of us is connected to each other in the way we protect or destroy the environment around us. From the story of the demise of the American Chestnut tree to the re-emergence of the coyote into the forests, this novel will tell you our history, and predict our future. It will also give you four memorable characters: Deanna, Lusa, Garnett, and Nanny.
