One of my all time favourites. A multi-layered, satisfying story with a wry narrator, this is a book that reflects on ninteteenth and twentieth century life in the guise of a nineteenth century novel. More subtle and complete than imitators such as the wink-wink, nudge-nudge of The Crimson Petal and the White or the psychodrama of The Lamplighter - even though I enjoyed those, too!
