Cotillion

I got this slightly-battered paperback from a friend who's decluttering, and was glad of another release copy of this marvelous novel - easily my favorite of Heyer's works, and one of my favorite novels across the board.
Heyer's Regency romances are lively, witty, and full of lush period detail - and usually include two, three, or even four romances, which Heyer juggles deftly. Cotillion is my favorite, largely because for a change the hero ISN'T a deadly duellist, dour Duke, brooding bad-boy, or rake; instead, he is possessed of skills that are much more to the point in fashionable London society, even if they don't seem especially dashing. [I trust that's not too much of a spoiler; it's usually fairly obvious who's supposed to wind up with whom in these stories, although the paths they take to get there are often surprising!] The dialog sparkles, all the characters are great fun, there are delightful conversational fencing matches, some rather madcap schemes, and a vastly satisfactory conclusion. Love this one!
[There's a TV Tropes page on Heyer and her work, including some comments on this one.]
