I've seen the animated movie (very very sad) and I've read Watership Down, Shardik and Maia, so I've been wanting to read this book for a while. Couldn't resist picking it up at the meet up.

Finished reading this. As expected, it was far above and beyond the animated movie, but what amazed me is the amount of what I would deem important detail that was left out of the movie; they cut out all the background information about the two dogs which impacted significantly on the flow of the story and the ending. While the book is tragic and sad, Richard Adams allows for a somewhat happy ending, despite the fact that the suffering endured by the dogs cannot be erased. The movie does not scratch at the surface of the horror of the research centre and leaves off at a point where the dogs appear to be doomed at the end. I definitely prefer the book. I would recommend this book to anyone, but I would advise if you cannot tolerate to read about the suffering of animals or are really squeamish, this book is not for you. I wouldn't think to let my daughter read this until she is a teenager.
