After long years on the road, the Carnival for the Gods has gone bust. Dusty--the impresario and high-wire star--has struggled to make the troop a success, but it finds itself stranded on a lonely New Mexico highway. A few members of the troop don't abandon it: a giant, the self-loathing midget, Billy, the magician, and Dusty's wife, a high-wire trapeze artist. Dusty discovers Amazing Grace, an exotic dancer who he hopes will rescue the troop from failure.
