I got this softcover from Better World Books. I'm fond of quirky alphabet books (see also Edward Gorey's Gashlycrumb Tinies), and this one is nicely weird. It's described as "a piratical ghost story in thirteen ingenious but potentially disturbing rhyming couplets", and features the adventures of two children and their pet gazelle. From "A is for Always, that's where we embark" to "Z waits alone, and it's not for a thing", the story winds its way through sewers and suspiciously Sweeney-Todd-esque pie shops and villains' lairs, and the artwork adds a LOT of potential subplot to the simple rhymes. Looking for the details is a lot of fun - and sometimes quite disturbing!
Don't miss the "please note", warning that this alphabet "has a dangerous flaw that an eagle-eyed reader may be able to discern". You have been challenged!
