Picked this up at The Great English Book Swap in Bamberg, Bayern, Germany yesterday because I love intercultural topics.

'Edgier than Bryson, hits harder than Mayle'
The Times

A year after arriving in France, Englishman Paul West is still struggling with some fundamental questions:

What is the best way to scare a gendarme? Why are there no health warnings on French nudist beaches? And is it really polite to sleep with your boss's mistress?

Paul opens his English tea room, and mutates (temporarily) into a Parisian waiter; samples the pleasures of typically French hotel-room afternoons; and, on a return visit to the UK, sees the full horror of a British office party through Parisian eyes.

Meanwhile, he continues his search for the perfect French mademoiselle. But will Paul find l'amour éternel, or will it all end in merde?

MERDE ACTUALLY
In his second comedy of errors, Paul West continues to sabotage the entente cordiale.

L'esprit fraçais explained with a British sense of humour. This fast-paced, witty, sexy and hilarious narrative will have you in stitches, yet it is full of intercultural wisdom.

Quotable quotes
• For the next two hours, [the mayor] drove me around to say hello to practically every farmer within three miles of Brigitte's place. There were oldies whose kids had gone to work in the city - meaning Limoges, Tulle or Brive. There were younger couples whose kids were planning to work in the city. It was rural depopulation before my very eyes.
I sat at tables in a dozen kitchens and ate strawberry tart, strawberry cake, strawberry mousse, strawberries in red wine or just plain strawberries. The downside to eating seasonal food is that you eat nothing else for the whole damn season. (Sexe and the Country, p. 64)
• Nathalie always lugged around her own water supply in case she accidentally wandered across the Mediterranean into the Sahara. (That Was No Lady, That Was Your Wife, p. 318)
