My Sergei: A Love Story
6 journalers for this copy...
This is the story of the Russian pairs figure skaters who were two-time Olympic champions in 1988 (Calgary) and 1994 (Lillehammer), Sergei Grinkov and Ekaterina Gordeeva. They were married and turned professional skaters in 1991, touring with the "Stars on Ice." They had one child, Daria in 1992. They were able to compete in the 1994 Olympics due to a one-time rule change that allowed professionals to regain eligibility. Products of the Soviet Olympic training system, they won gold in 1988. The 1994 gold medal, won after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, was (as Gordeeva said) "won for us."
Sadly, Grinkov collapsed and died of a massive heart attack in November 1995 while practicing for the 1995-96 season of Stars on Ice. He was 28, Gordeeva was 24.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Added to Wrap It Up book box.
I don't know why I never JE'd this!!! I got this from the wrap it up bookbox, but I realize that I have already read it!! I'm going to put it in another bookbox!
I am releasing this to the non-fiction bookbox.
Gordeeva clearly identifies this as a love story, which is so beautifully told I began to fall a little in love with Sergei myself. But it's also a lot more. There are glimpses of the Russian language and culture, a lot of insider information about training and choreography for figure skating pairs, and a generous sprinkling of pictures. It's a fascinating, heart-breaking, and altogether lovely book.
