This was The Big Read in Menomonee Falls in 2019. I found a copy that someone had put in my Little Free Library, and decided to register it for BookCrossing. I wasn’t willing to give up my own copy, because I loved this book way too much!
I had seen the movie, starring John Wayne, 50 years ago. I thought it was ... ok. Didn’t thrill me; but I thought it was worthwhile to have seen it. I didn’t even realize there was a book behind the film!
The book is SO rich in vocabulary, and in history. It gives us a good picture of how the Civil War continued, after the treaty was signed at Appomattox. It suggests the importance of railroads, and reveals a little about justice in the “Indian territory” in the 1880s.
I think this book has a little something for everyone.
