It took me several years to actually get into reading this book; I kept picking it up and putting it back down before I got very far. I got bogged down in the writing style and the old-fashioned language. However, once I did finally get past the first fifty pages or so, the story became very compelling and toward the end I found I had as much trouble putting it down as I'd initially had picking it up.

Authors in 1897 simply didn't have the same grasp of suspense as today's authors, so I found the climax of the story shockingly brief, but the rest of the novel was well rounded out and the depth given and attention paid to each of the main characters was very satisfying to me.
