Oh this made terribly sad..it has sat on my bookshelf for years and I thought a second re-read might be in order. Still, very sad and terrifying. The idea that this book captures 'all women bound by their own psychological cells' makes you see each character trapped not just by the obvious -in this case a loveless marriage constrained by Egyptian society- but by their own devices, their own expectations. The need to be something more runs through this book but it just doesn't happen, and that can be said of women all over-the silent ruminations and slow awakenings that lead nowhere and bode ill for them. Bit depressing really
