I got this fair-condition paperback with a "Greek Mythology" theme at the local library's ongoing book sale, and was pleased to have another release copy. [It's the 12,000th book I've registered, in 15 years of BookCrossing!]

I enjoyed the variety of tone and setting in this collection. Among my favorite stories:

"The Littlest Maenad" by Esther M. Friesner features a rather stuffy club, one of whose members has managed to invoke Dionysus. The storyline's amusing, but my favorite part of this one was the contrast between the oh-so-proper characters and the not-proper-at-all god.

"Flight" by Jane Yolen is a short-short tale of a tomboy who's decided that she's going to ride Pegasus no matter what the rules say.

"Mantik Rites" by John DeCles is a murder mystery set in ancient Greece, in which the main character uses his own abilities as an oracle to learn who killed his best friend.

Lawrence Watt-Evans' "In Re: Nephelegeretes" has one of Zeus' many (manymanymany) conquests - a modern-day California woman with connections of her own - bring a paternity suit against the randy god.

"February Thaw" by Tanya Huff is a funny tale of a marital tiff between Persephone and Hades, resulting in the young woman returning to her mother's home. This, of course, wreaks havoc with the weather, and Demeter's attempts to correct the situation - and poor Hades' explanation of the cause of the spat - are all charming and funny.

Other stories include a lonely archaeologist using some ancient grain to invoke the aid of the gods; a harpy transformed by love - or is it lust?; an intriguing origin-story linking Herakles and Excaliber; Apollo having some problems in his love-life; Greek gods on a modern-day daytime talk show; and more.
