A brilliant debut novel set in late 17th century Amsterdam. I loved the writing, characters and the plot. Haunting, mesmerizing and magical.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Going to GoryDetails as a wishlist tag. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.
The book arrived safely today; many thanks! (Love the bookplate, too!) I've always been fond of miniatures, from dollhouses to gaming dioramas to the marvelous crime-scene miniatures in The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death, and put this novel on my wishlist because I wanted to see how a 17th-century interpretation would play out. [The novel inspired a 2017 mini-series.]
Later: Lovely, lyrical prose, that really put me into the setting and into the main character's life - even when that was uncomfortable. I loved that she gradually learned to cope with her new life, distant or outright malicious husband and sister-in-law, and strange customs, foods, and business practices. (At times it felt like a tutorial in period Dutch trading {wry grin}.) I adored the descriptions of the miniature house and furnishings, though as the details got more personal and the miniaturist remained enigmantic, it felt stalker-ish.
As for the main plot, with the increasing tribulations of Nella's husband weighing down the entire household, it was quite a downer - with threads of hope for the surviving characters, if only they can escape from this highly restrictive society!
