The Summer Before the War: A Novel

I enjoy reading stories set in England in the years before Great War and as this is written by the author of Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, I knew it was a winner.

Took the book to the BC Meetup today.
This was on my wish list, so I was happy to snap it up at the April meet- up of Calgary BookCrossers, Cravings Market Restaurant.
I had been eying this book in the store - with a woman in a red hat riding a bicycle, it just hooked me. And like rureading, I had loved Major Pettigrew's Last Stand.
This book did not disappoint me. All the characters were richly drawn and the place and period described with much detail and colour. I will certaily look for more works by Helen Simonson.

Taken to the June meet-up of Calgary BookCrossers, held a Cravings Market Restaurant.
Brought this home from the May bookcrossing meeting. Looking forward to reading it.
The story kind of meandered along and took me quite a while to read the almost 500 pages. The pace picked up towards the end and I found myself quite enjoying it.
Taking this to the August meeting to be enjoyed by the next reader.
Picked up at August get together
This was an interesting book. I enjoyed the characters, and how Beatrice Nash was determined to figure out and make her way in the world, despite issues with her father's estate. It had a nice range of characters from different classes within the small town. The writing style also worked for me, and flowed nicely.
Thanks for the interesting read!

Taken to get together!
Brought this book home from the July Meet Up at Cravings.
I enjoyed this book, just as I enjoyed Major Pettigrew's Last Stand. Good character development. I liked how strong the character Beatrice was - a survivor. Gave a good glimpse into how females were treated at the time and the atmosphere in Britain at the start of the war and how people were swept up in it.
I am taking this book to the September meeting at Cravings.
I am halfway through Major Pettigrew so when I heard that it was by the same author, I just had to put my hand out.
So many books ahead of it on the TBR Mountain Range, but...rules are meant to be broken.

Now I am halfway through this great book and really enjoying having the time to read now that the garden is done for the year. Love the character!
Releasing this to the Calgary Bookcrossers Travelling Book Box #3 - the Bullet Book Box!
