You know when you’re having a shit life? You would really want Marian Keyes to write your way out of it! You would then know for sure that the pain would be worth the effort, as she can then reward you with the good things forever more. She always takes her characters to some dark places (no exception with poor Lucy Sullivan here). This gives what could otherwise be a nice fluffy romance story depth and personality. I love the magic of her way with words. She has a simply wonderful way of combining them. I love the way she always finds the humour in all of lives ups and downs - her characters way of looking at things is right up my alley! I hope the author gets as many laughs from writing her books as I do in reading them!

Some of my favourite bits here are, Lucy Driving, Lucy ditching Chuck, Megan trying to guess Meredia’s real name, Karen’s bitterness and just Lucy’s take on life in general. Gus did my head in a bit. I have been looking forward to reading this for ages. Then a few pages in, I realised I must have read it years and years ago (near to when it was first published). Didn’t spoil my enjoyment of it. There was a TV series made of it. I think I’ll try tracking that down.

Finally got to reading this book.

I love Marian Keyes’ books. Of course they’re a bit predictable at times, but they are highly entertaining and besides the kind of cliché love stories, she always adds in some deeper issues and new dimensions to the story. This book was no exception and once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down.

I have to say I thought Lucy was immensely stupid and naive. And Gus sounded like the most annoying person in the world. I cringed when I read his conversations on the evening when Lucy met him. What a tw*t. If the book was only gonna be Lucy + Gus story, I would have given up. He annoyed me so much and hence I was annoyed with her being so naive.

At first I couldn’t believe that she didn’t see that her dad was an alcoholic and that she seemed to help him with his addiction by bringing bottles of strong alcohol and sending money. I guess it was a coping mechanism, but it really annoyed me and I’m glad she eventually realised who her father was. Even though this was supposed to be a funny, light story about Lucy Sullivan who’s getting married, I felt like the story delivered a lot more. I’m really happy that I have read it and great thanks fo Shahrun fir sending it to me!

I hope I can pass this book on to someone else soon.
