Well, I like Philip Larkin's poems and spent some time in Hull so I have a fellow feeling. (That's not to say Hull isn't a good place, unlike the view expressed in a recent publication, it is ). But I can't say this book, which someone gave me for Christmas, was very inspiring. Rather depressing, in fact. But it was pretty atmospheric, we've all forgotten how cold and miserable life was before central heating. The trouble was I couldn't actually get to like any of the characters. but perhaps you will.
