I enjoyed reading this book. The fact that it refers to some events from a preceding book did not cause any difficulty following the story.

The story is a tale of a despondent Earth on the brink of starvation, a discovery of a source of unlimited food, and the adventures in finding and bringing it into use. Along the way, an alien (?) species is discovered and links to Earth's past are uncovered.
