This is a very different kind of book. I can see why Howard Jacobson wins awards for his writing. It is powerful and memorable. The story is both humorous and distressing. I prefer more dialogue in a story usually, and more plot, but what dialogue there was felt very genuine. I enjoyed especially Ch. 5 and 9 The conversation between Julian and Hephzibah about whether a nebbish knows he's a nebbish - priceless. The entire work is an inside and outsie lok at what it is to be a Jew.
