In einen kleinen Dorf im Norden Finnlands taucht Anfang der fünfziger Jahre ein sonderbarer Mensch namens Huttunen auf,der die seit langem unbenutzte Mühle des Dorfes kauft und wieder in Betrieb setzt.Zunächst nimmt man ihn wohlwollend auf,aber bald stellt sich heraus das er mit einem Makel behaftet ist:er verfällt bisweilen in tiefe Traurigkeit,und bei Widrigkeiten aller Art flüchtet er in die Wälder und heult wie ein Wolf den Mond an.
