I have not yet read a Spenser book I didn't like and this one is no different. Up until this point, Spenser's past has been shrouded in mystery but this book he really opens himself up while conversing with Susan Silveman. We discover early on that he had been a mentor to a man named Paul who is now a performer in theater. He comes to Spenser asking if he can help him find his mother who has gone missing. It seems like a simple case of tracking a person down, but it the person who she is with is wanted by the Broz Family, a leading mob group in Boston. They eventually locate his mother but are caught in the crossfire when Gerry Broz and other thugs come to kill the man she is with. The most exciting part of the book is the chase through the woods that ensues after Spenser makes a break for it. It is an exciting cat and mouse chase that puts Spenser against about 5 guys. It is really fast paced and well written. Eventually, Spenser ends up in a shootout with Gerry in the middle of the Public Gardens. The book is a must read for fans of the Spenser series. My only problem with this book is that it gets off to a slow start, but the slow start is well worth the ending.

probably the best spenser book i've ever read!!!
This book is oaded with conflict and information about Spenser's past. he is reunited with his former somewhat adopted son, Paul. Paul is searching for his mother Patty, who is gone away with Rich Beaumont a man wanted by the mob. Paul and Spenser find them in western Mass. Unfortunately, the mob is on their tails and Spenser is shot while fleeing from the recently purchased house. He goes on a wild escapade with Pearl through the woods with a wounded leg. He tricks the mob into crossing a stream and holds gerry broz hostage until he can reach the highway. he gets there and Hawk picks him up and leaves gerry there.
The Mob wants to find Beaumont because he stole over a million dollars from them. They go to Spenser's office and warn him that Gerry, the inexperienced son of Joe Broz the Mob leader will attempting to kill him. Then Vinnie Morris quit on Joe and Joe is left with his son as the only inheritant.
The shootout takes place in the commons with Spenser shooting Gerry in the leg. Spenser tells Joe Gerry needs a new profession and the story ends with Spenser and Susan eating pie and smooching.
