from the back of the book:
Begun in 1959 by a twenty-two -year-old Hunter S Thompson, the Rum Diary is a brilliantly tangled love story of jealousy, treachery, and violent alcoholic lust in the Caribbean boomtown that was San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the late 1950's. The narrator, freelance journalist Paul Kemp, irresistibly drawn to a sexy, mysterious woman, is soon thrust into a world where corruption and get-rich-quick schemes rule and anything (including murder) is permissible. Exuberant and mad, youthful and energetic, this dazzling comedic romp provides a fictional excursion as riveting and outrageous as Thompson's Tear and Loathing books.

Paul Kemp moves to San Juan, Puerto Rico to write for the local newspaper and it quickly drawn into the underground of news reporting, which includes continuously functioning in a drunken stupor and get-rich-quick as schemes. I enjoyed the gritty, fast-paced feel of the novel but felt the ending feel flat. Although, all good things must come to an end and that is exactly what happened to Paul Kemp.
I finished this book on the plane ride to visit dabercro and will be leaving the book with her.
