This is actually 3 different novellas in one book. Legends of the Fall is the third. I wanted to read the book after seeing the movie with Brand Pitt & Anthony Hopkins. I haven't had a chance to get into it yet. Legends of the Fall is really only 90 pages so It shouldn't take me long once I get down to it.

Jim Harrison's style of writing is very interesting. He writes in long paragraphs that ramble on and on, sometimes for more than a page. Is this what they call, "stream-of-consciousness" writing? He uses vivid imagery then tops it of with a zen-like observation.

"Susannah arrived as a pale pink sexual ghost and her womb covered him, saline like the spray of the bowsprit until he was a ghost, too, and he was the ocean, Susannah herself, the bucking horse beneath him, the wood of the sea horse beneath him, both wind ripping the sails and the moon above the sails and the light of the dark between."

That is what his sentences are like. You can imagine how the paragraphs run on and on! It's not a style that lends itself to speed reading. Once I slowed down to savor his style it was much more rewarding.

"He reached for her hand and after a while she joined his deep and dreamless sleep, wound about each other with all the loneliness faded at last from the earth."
