In a narrative replete with poison arrows, devouring snakes, scientific miracles, and spiritual transformations, State of Wonder presents a world of stunning surprise and danger, rich in emotional resonance and moral complexity.
As Dr. Marina Singh embarks upon an uncertain odyssey into the insect-infested Amazon, she will be forced to surrender herself to the lush but forbidding world that awaits within the jungle. Charged with finding her former mentor Dr. Annick Swenson, a researcher who has disappeared while working on a valuable new drug, she will have to confront her own memories of tragedy and sacrifice as she journeys into the unforgiving heart of darkness. Stirring and luminous, State of Wonder is a world unto itself, where unlikely beauty stands beside unimaginable loss beneath the rain forest's jeweled canopy.
Awesome book. It kept me engaged throughout. Made you think about fertility and the extremes that people go to. Also about relationships.

Taking this book to the January meet up at Cravings.
Passed to me at the January meet-up of Calgary BookCrossers. To be added to Mnt. TBR.
I have just closed this book and I am overwhelmed with emotions. I have lived in the Amazon for this past week - immersed with the richness of the characters, the relentless barrage of insects, snakes and stew that is the river.
The story keep me turning pages and haunted my dreams. After Bel Cantor and State of Wonder, I will certainly be adding everything that written by Ann Patchett to my wishlist!

Taking to the November meet-up of Calgary BookCrossers at Cravings Market Restaurant.
I have a slight feeling I was coerced into taking this book home with me... but it still seems like quite an interesting read.
I wasn't planning on reading this book right away but since its the only book available for immediate download from the library website in audiobook form, I started on this earlier than expected.
It's the kind of book that resonated after I finished it at the end. It left me questioning the long term implications of the main characters' actions and how it would influence the development of the amazonian tribes, and the world that has evolved such an intricate symbiotic relationship with the natural environment.
Long story short, this book left the analytical side along with the slightly attention deficit part of my mind moving as I got through it, and kept me thinking long after I finished it. Amazing descriptions and fascinating characters (although I had to shake my head at Martina's naïveté at times) - a very satisfying read altogether.
Will be brought to the next Calgary BookCrossing meetup and handed off or handed back.

Taking to the December meet-up of Calgary BookCrossers, held at Cravings Market Restaurant.
Brought this home from the December meeting. Looking forward to reading it.
Enjoyed this book very much. Like the other's who have read before me I was transported into the Amazon Jungle. The ending while satisfying left me with some unanswered questions.
Taking this to the April BookCrossing meeting to be enjoyed by the next reader.
Just picked up this book at the monthly Calgary Book Crossing meeting.
I quite enjoyed the read, it kept me engaged throughout the entire book. Although in a weird way I found the ending both satisfying and unsatisfying at the same time. I wanted Marina to stay in the jungle, I wanted to know more about what happened with Easter and the cannibals, I wanted to learn more about the odd traditions and ceremonies that were so vaguely explained. But I guess that is what makes this book so great, it leaves you wanting more.
I released this book at cravings market restaurant at the monthly bookcrossing meeting.
Picked up at August get together
This was a well written book, though slower than I was looking for at the time. It was interesting to see how people cut themselves off to meet their goals, and how assumptions which can be made can be very wrong. It was an interesting concept, though a bit heady with the main character being overall dissatisfied with her life. I also am not certain how I feel about the resolution of the story or the younger character.
Thanks for the interesting read.
Thanks for the interesting read.
Brought this book home from the July Meet Up at Cravings. This was my book and no one else interested in taking it. I'll find a new home for it.
I am bringing this to the January meetup at Cravings to pass on to the next reader.
Safely in my hands.
Just finished the audio book version. I enjoyed the book but it cemented my desire to never go to the jungle!
I am taking this book to our monthly bookcrossers meet up at Cravings - the second Saturday of every month- to pass on to the next reader.
just picked this book up at last meeting
I got a bunch of books back from L-Marie to get them back into the group, this was one of them
Adding this to Book Box 2. This box is circulating through our group. We may not be able to meet in person but we can still exchange books.
I am dismantling Book Box 2 as we are back to in person meetings. Books will be sorted and bagged up for either a person who requested it or to the person who introduced it to the group. Please help me out if you can by making arrangements to collect your books. I have enough of my own books to deal with so please wild release or give away your own books as I don't have the capacity right now.
