This book is lyrical and wonderful ... the story of two boys "reeducated" during the Cultural Revolution and sent to a mountaintop village to live with peasants. They live on banned literature and illict love ...

I received this book in the mail today - thank you so much starlit45! I should get to it over the weekend, hope to send it on before Christmas.

I have to say that I did not find this as interesting as I'd hoped it was going to be. I had picked it up several times in bookshops and thought about buying a copy, and having read it now, I guess I'm indifferent. I liked the characters, I found some parts quite poetic and other parts comical, but mostly I just found it readable.

However, we all have different tastes, and I hope the next person on the list loves it.

Sent on to Bookfrog today, Christmas Eve... Merry Christmas Bookfrog and all.

I received this book from littlemave last night (it went to her post box for safe keeping). Have been looking forward to reading this.

Bookfrog has kindly let me jump the queue with this bookray. I'm leaving the country in less than 3 weeks (argh!) and instead of pulling out of the bookray I thought I'd just jump the queue. I know Fushmush won't mind either as she is away on holidays. I picked it up from Bookfrog today and I shall return it to her next weekend! Thanks Bookfrog!

An enchanting little tale that highlights how powerful books really can be. It was an effortless and short read. I wanted more :) I would love to see the movie now.

Back to Bookfrog either today or tomorrow.

Received this book back and read it in a quick short space of time. Very easy book to read, full of very interesting things. Makes me wish I had not missed the film. Full of interesting tidbits about the countryside and the communists and being reeducated and the tough things they had to go through and the lives of people at that time.

Very fascintating read, interesting story about the byplay between the relationship between the characters. Perhaps because it was so short, I would have liked more information, a bit more depth. Suddenly in the middle of it from the first person there are semi-interviews with other characters with no explanation of who interviewed them or why or what happened?

Give to FushMush tomorrow!

Received from Bookfrog last night at our inaugural cocktails evening (a la all men are bastards). I must admit I had one cocktail too many and woke up with a sore head this morning.

I started to read this on the bus this morning and I almost missed my stop! I'm completely riveted.

What a charming, easy read. An interesting story from a fascinating period in Chinese history. Would like to watch the film now. I'm definitely going to have a BC film night sometime in the future :D.

However, I must admit I was disappointed with the last 1/4 of the novel. It didn't quite fit, when the story shifts from first person to small chapters from the perspective of the other characters and then it all ends quite abruptly.

I think I'd like to hear "Mozart Is Thinking of Chairman Mao" :D

The order of the ray has changed again. It's off to Noodlebowl next as she lives next door.

Yes, I am the girl next door! Will start reading tonight. May or may not be ready to pass on to Veracity at meetup!

Journal Entry 12 by noodlebowl from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Friday, February 13, 2004
Well. Didn't quite finish this book before meetup, but it will be going to Veracity this weekend. I was expecting more from this book, so was slightly dissapointed. I would really like to see the movie though as there were some very visual moments in the book. Especially loved the gingko leave sex scene. heh.

I think a reading of the book would improve if you've ever read any Balzac.

Dropped off to Veracity tonight. Hope it gets to her safely! Enjoy!

A quick, pleasant read with some brilliant moments (Like the boys dressing up as Maoist officers to collect folk songs from a lice ridden old man).

I'm a bit worried about this one. I sent it off to Meganh a couple of months ago, but it doesn't seem to have arrived. Hope it's not lost!
