The one story in this volume that was selected by 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die is "The Garden-Party". Here's what I wrote when I read it:
Adolescence is the time for feeling very strongly, and for making shocking discoveries about aspects of the world you’d never thought about... Although Laura, the girl in this story, thinks she dismisses her mother’s class prejudices, she’s nonetheless very safe in her little world. But she’s shaken up by the death of a man from the dingy nearby cottages, and feels the grotesque nature of her "sympathy visit" to his wife terribly. She has not yet put on her mother’s thick armor of convention. No doubt she won’t have such experiences when she herself is middle-aged; whatever configuration she freezes into will necessarily be different from her mother’s though.
