The Agatha Award winner debuts a 1930s London mystery series, featuring a penniless twenty-something member of the extended royal family.

Her ridiculously long name is Lady Victoria Georgiana Charlotte Eugenie, daughter to the Duke of Atholt and Rannoch. And she is flat broke. As the thirty-fourth in line for the throne, she has been taught only a few things, among them, the perfect curtsey. But when her brother cuts off her allowance, she leaves Scotland, and her fiancé Fish-Face, for London, where she has:

a) worked behind a cosmetics counter-and gotten sacked after five hours
b) started to fall for a quite unsuitable minor royal
c) made some money housekeeping (incognita, of course), and
d) been summoned by the Queen to spy on her playboy son.

Then an arrogant Frenchman, who wants her family's 800-year-old estate for himself, winds up dead in her bathtub. Now her most important job is to clear her very long family name...

Absolutely fantastic - a hilarious heroine, very warm and personable, and quite a good catchy mystery too. Like a classy historical Stephanie Plum (not in a bad way).

Off to Eldau-1 through the Oz VBB.

Thanks, jennymidget. Looks like a bit of fun. A new series for me and great that this is the no. 1.

(I read this in Feb-March 2016, but sorry am only catching up now.)
Not a bad little read at all! It was just perfect for a holiday read by Coogee Beach.
I started this and read it in fits and starts because of other hospital happenings. A bit of fun! I really enjoyed the feel of the time and place.
Thanks jennymidget.

I passed this on to my sister in Sydney to read - and she loved it! Said she couldn't put it down. So then of course I had to read it too. And I enjoyed it as well. The title and cartoon cover put me off, it looked like pap. But it was suspenseful and a bit of fun.

I will take to the next BX meeting on 24 Feb.

This interesting story keeps one reading. It is about Lady Victoria Georgina Charlotte Eugenie, who is 34th in line for the throne. She lived in the country with her Aunt, but after being engaged to Prince Stiegfried, who she didn't like, escaped to London where she lived in a big, empty, family home, but as she had no allowance had to work out how she could survive. Disguising herself as a cleaning maid she got work cleaning for rich ladies. However arriving home one day she found a strange man drowned in her bath. Of course suspicion falls on her and her half brother, who had been in London about that time. From then on she turned into trying to solve the crime. Fortunately things turn out for the better.
