Helen Huntingdon is trapped in a marriage to a drunken, vile husband she cannot love. When she leaves him, taking with him her young son, she is going against everything that society demands and breaking the law. She sets up house in Wildfell Hall and hence becomes neighbour to Gilbert Markham, the narrator.

Anne Brontë's classic is an excellent read and a fascinating illustration of life in Regency England.
