O protagonista da história é Ricardo Reis, heterónimo de Fernando Pessoa, que desembarca em Lisboa em 1936, vindo do Brasil, onde se havia refugiado por motivos políticos. Este personagem, espectador e testemunha de graves acontecimentos, consegue através da extraordinária capacidade de efabulação de Saramago, prender o leitor e transportá-lo ao clima sombrio daquela época.
