The Poisonwood Bible: A Novel
3 journalers for this copy...
This follows the Price family as they leave their home in Bethlehem, Georgia to mission the people of the Belgian Congo in 1959. They take with them all that they think they need, but they they are very unprepared for life there with tragic consequences.
Will release at the June Bookcrossing meeting at Joshua Tree Cafe in Calgary, AB
I've been interested in the hype about the book and now I have an opportunity to judge for myself. Thanks MoomaOma - (cute name)
I liked how the story was told through the various sisters' and mother's recollections of the events. Of the four sisters, Rachel and Adah had often humorous and inventive stories to tell of the family's time in the Congo.
Taking the book to the Calgary BC Meetup at the Joshua Tree Cafe today.
Picked up at the March 2013 Calgary bookcrossing meet up.
Nobody else wanted this book... I started on reading it this evening. A few pages in I was thinking 'What have I done?!?' and then (finally) realised it was just the intro. Thank goodness! I'm now a couple paragraphs into the book (proper) and breathing a lot easier.

It took me five days to finish this book. For me, that's a long time for a fiction. The reason for that, namely is because it took me three days to get into it and the point at which I got sucked in wasn't until about page 162. For those of you that get this book next, stick to it!! It's worth it in the end!
I loved the ways the family evolved over time - their relations, their views on religion, and their values. The same time period reflected in five points of view with five different influences is a daunting task but somehow the author managed to pull it through... It just took her 162 pages to build it up.
Will be handed off at next Calgary bookcrossing meet up and handed off.
