It's a new month... time for some new bug fixes!
While Matt is still working on harnessing the book data that we all have contributed to, and making it available for searches, he's also been rather busy fixing other things, and even adding some nifty little features. Read all about it in this Announcements forum post.Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster (Audiobook on 4 cassettes)

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about!!
I read a lot of memoirs and non-fiction and I just have to say that this is the most outstanding example of how to write a true adventure book that I've yet come across. I'm not a climber (not even really a backpacker, more like a 7-mile day-hiker...), but Krakauer explains everything about the sport in a way that is totally understandable without being dumbed-down. The account he gives of his epic trip to the top of Mount Everest is gripping, awe-inspiring, tragic, and fascinating in every way. Krakauer uses his enviable vocabulary with great results as he describes the weather, the people, and the unfolding drama. I honestly didn't want this book to end.
I listened to the audio version of this book, read by Jon Krakauer himself. It's always a plus when an author narrates their own audiobooks. This one especially so because you can hear real anger and agony in his voice.

Offered up and claimed during iwillrejoice's Audio VBB. Enjoy!
Picked this off the list of iwillrejoice's Audio VBB. Thanks so much for sharing and sending this to me, Moody-Blue. :-)
I "ear-read" this book for book_drunkard's New Year's Resolution Challenge. I felt that the author did a very good job describing, to a non-climber, the terms and challenges of mountain climbing. May 10, 1996 was a horrific experience for those involved in this Mt Everest climbing expedition. Accomplished climber and journalist, Jon Krakauer, was there to record what happened during the disastrous climb that killed several fellow climbers as they descended the south face of this famous mountain. This book certainly held my attention and, at times, it was hard to put it down. I don't think I will be forgetting this tale to none to soon.
Sending this off in an audiobook box. Happy Travels!
Since I don't enjoy abridged versions, I'll be moving this one on soon.
(As far as abridgements go, this one isn't bad. They only cut 3 hours.)
