Alistair Cooke was one of the world's best-loved broadcasters, whose weekly BBC programme Letter from America entertained listeners around the globe from 1946 until shortly before his death in 2004. Penguin publish editions of Cooke's Letters spanning the length of his career. Those collected here -- some previously unpublished -- have been specially selected on the theme of the changing seasons to show the range, intimacy and elegance of Cooke's inimitable style.

Alistair Cooke's Letter from America has been an institution for as long as I can remember. No wonder, if one looks at its lifespan: 58 years!

Reading from this selection, I could not only hear his voice; I could feel the tempo, the pauses, the intonation as if he were reading them live. What an impact this man has had on several decades of radio listeners!
