I read this a couple of years ago. This is what remember of the story. Excuse me if I got the facts wrong.

The story is of Ruth Cole, whose mother left her to be raised alone by her father at the age of 4. When her mother left, she also took all the pictures of Ruth's dead brothers with her. But her father never took down the picture hooks. We follow Ruth as she meets up with Eddie, her mother's teenaged lover from 37 years ago and they tour Amsterdam together; a departure from Irving's usual romp through Vienna. Still, Irving's biographical roots in Phillips Exeter Academy in NH was prominently displayed as usual.

Not Irving's best work; the beginning of the decline of his muse.
