Not sure what I was expecting from this novel. I really enjoyed the author's debut novel - 'The Piano Tuner" and was probably wanting a similar type of read.
While the story was enjoyable I don't feel it really reached it's objective of exploring the bonds between families. The age of the girl character confused the message somewhat.
Otherwise I think it is worth a read. Enjoy.

Thank you bronwyna and in-between teenage boys for channelling this book to me. I enjoyed the Piano Tuner and really wanted to try this book. It does look like a holiday read so I might place it on the holiday pile - next holiday may not be for a while, unfortunately...

I can't believe this book has been on my shelves for NINE years!!! And been meaning to read it all that time and now it's finally happened. In a way I'm glad it took that long because I think the world knows more about migrants now and it helped me understand some of the subtext much better. It's a bit uneven with some parts of the story not working as well as others. However some moments in it are quite meaningful and well-written. All in all a thoughtful and moving well-crafted story. It's now ready to travel again!

A very quick read for me (for a change), and I enjoyed following young teenager Isabel’s story of her forced migration to the city after years of drought. She was hopeful because she thought she would see her beloved brother, but her search for him over the months was difficult and led her into difficult situations.
I liked how the author showed the poverty of the country and even the city in the shanty towns. I spent most of the novel trying to work out the location of the story, perhaps Argentina or Uruguay?

This a truly beautifully written story which gives the reader a glimpse into a kind of poverty and powerless existence that is both heartbreaking and unforgettable.
The ending was rather abrupt, I was left wanting more...
