Barnes & Noble Review

Anansi Boys, a sequel of sorts to Neil Gaiman's Hugo- and Nebula Award–winning American Gods, revolves around a prudish guy named Fat Charlie, the unwitting son of the spider-trickster god Anansi, who, after finding out about the death of his estranged father, meets the brother he never knew he had: and watches as his orderly life devolves into supernaturally induced chaos.

Fat Charlie's life in London is anything but remarkable. Though he works in a dead-end job for a despicable boss who resembles "an albino ferret in an expensive suit" and dates a woman whose mother hates him, Fat Charlie's bland existence takes a dramatic turn when he is summoned to Florida for his father's funeral.

The trouble starts when Fat Charlie meets his brother, Spider, who received all of his father's charm, wit, and wild sense of adventure. When Spider shows up in London and seduces his brother's fiancée, Fat Charlie reluctantly begins a journey of self-discovery that leads him to the very beginnings of the world, where the oldest, and most powerful, stories reside.

A quirky, imaginative and entertaining read . . . but then what else would you expect? Oh, and it involves gods to a certain degree - of course. But basically a story about stories. Stories, songs and myths, and how we need them in our lives.

Thanks again KansasKiwi.

What a great read! I just loved the mix of fantasy and comedy, which reminded me a lot of books by Tom Holt and Connie Willis. This is now officially my favourite Gaiman novel, along with Neverwhere:)

Thanks again for this lovely RABCK crimson-tide:-)

Thank you Chich. This was a surprise discovery in my postbox this morning. I'm off on a trip to England tomorrow, and I'd already picked my books to take, but this one's definitely coming along for the ride!

I am definitely a convert to Neil Gaiman’s books, having previously only read his collaboration with Terry Pratchett ‘Good Omens’. This has all the ingredients for a favourite book - humour, fantasy, a fairytale quality - and it does not disappoint. My husband, reading a page of dialogue over my shoulder, asked me if it was a children’s book, and I agree that the style of writing is somewhat simplistic. I would say that this is a crossover book between teenage and adult fiction, and could be enjoyed by both age-groups, rather like Harry Potter. There are moments of sheer terror in the book, at least for the characters, but I cannot say that I felt it myself, so I would not consider it unsuitable for younger readers, unless they had a particularly vivid imagination and suffered from nightmares. It would make a fabulous film, with so many colourful characters; I do hope somebody has made it or is planning to do so!

Yeey, the book has arrived. We briefly feared the book had gotten lost somewhere, but bookguide kindly explained she had put it on travelling without actually sending the book on its way. Hence a little confusion. Doesn't matter, it happens to the best of us! ;)
Thanks for sending it my way, bookguide!

I have really enjoyed this book. It was witty and adventurous and I never really knew where it was going. (Although what happened to Grahame Coats wasn't that unexpected, you still really wanted it to happen to him!)

I have now discovered a new authour who I wouldn't mind to get to know a little better!
(PM'ed the next participant.)

It's here. I'm planning on starting it after I'm done with the two books I am currently reading, so hopefully it shouldn't be too long before it's on its way again.

Journal Entry 21 by rem_VSP-560485 at Gatineau, Québec Canada on Sunday, April 17, 2011
It seems that this novel is set in the same universe as another novel by this author, American Gods, but I haven’t read it. This said, I did not feel like I was missing any crucial information, and it doesn’t look as the two novels are direct sequels to each other. Even though, personally, I found this book average, I read it rather easily and quickly. It is easy to understand why Neil Gaiman is so popular: it is a perfect mix of fantasy, action, and humour, on a background of complex family relationships. You can’t be bored, with him!

The book is now on its way to kiyotefoxx

Quite funny, I was with a friend when I opened my mailbox and she saw the stamp saying it was shipped from Singapore. She was quite thrilled for me that I was receiving packets from across the globe!
