The author was a teenager when he was taken from his home in Sighet, Transylvania to Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944. From Auschwitz, he was transported to Buchenwald. He writes of the death of his family and of his despair.

This book is a new translation by his wife, Marion Wiesel and is considered the most accurate translation in English of this book.
