I typically don't gravitate towards YA, but the cover caught my eye and I'm glad I picked it up.

I love the concept of a heist story told in a fantasy setting. The characters are well written and remind me of the crews from Oceans 11 and Firefly. The world building and magic system are also great.

For fans of YA or fantasy, this recommendation is a no-brainer. Read it.

From Chapters.ca

"Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price--and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can't pull it off alone...

A convict with a thirst for revenge.

A sharpshooter who can't walk away from a wager.

A runaway with a privileged past.

A spy known as the Wraith.

A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums.

A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes.

Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz's crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction-if they don't kill each other first."

Picked up this book at the Calgary BookCrossing October meet-up. This was sold to me as Firefly but with teenagers and magic. Also, the pages have fancy black edges.

This was a fun book. I also didn't realize that it's set in the same world as the author's other trilogy. I couldn't tell at all that it was building on events that happened elsewhere; a sign of great world building. I was reminded very much of Firefly, in that you have this ragtag group trying to pull off this impossible heist. It is slightly annoying to think that they're all the same age; somehow that stretched my suspension of disbelief more than the magic. The random info dumps about the characters' past also bothered me. I wished the author had found a more organic way to work in the information. Aside from that, everything else was great. Thankfully, this is just a duology, so I'd happily read the conclusion to this story.
