Journal Entry 1 by Caro1 from Newark On Trent, Nottinghamshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, March 29, 2005
Twelve-year-old Amir is desperate to win the approval of his father and resolves to win the local kite-fighting toumament, to prove that he has the makings of a man. His loyal friend Hassan promises to help him? for he always helps Amir? but this is 1970s Afghanistan and Hassan is merely a low-caste servant who is jeered at in the street, although Amir still feels jealous of his natural courage and the place he holds in his father's heart. But neither of the boys could foresee what would happen to Hassan on the afternoon of the tournament, which was to shatter their lives. After the Russians invade and the family is forced to flee to America, Amir realises that one day he must return, to find the one thing that his new world cannot grant him: redemption.

Finished this yesterday, and I have to say it's the first book I've read in a long time that made me actually cry instead of just being quietly moved. This is a wonderful book, descriptive yet sparse. The writing is deceptive in the way that it guides you through the unsettling sequences and it's as if you have to go back and make sure that you've read correctly.
The humour used deflects the sadness, but in a way highlights it, I think.
The themes of friendship and love shine through in a lovely way. It is everything the reviews say, and more!
(will pm the next person and send it next week. :)

well, this came in the post on saturday. instead of revising for exams, i just sat down and begun reading it. it took me the best part of a day to get through since i had other things to do, but i was so eager to finish it to see how the story ended.
i've given it a 9 simply because it was so moving. i recognised words and phrases as well as the overall experiences of afghanistan/pakistan,and whilst these add to the narrative,it was the story that made me cry. it was so...powerful, but yet so unusual, and something that will stay with me. i'm saving up for my own copy, and will check out Hosseini's other books, but thanks Carol!
p.s will PM urbanspaceman now and arrange for book to be posted out this week.
pps. posted book out today (tuesday 24th)

Just had this from Safness (though only just, I think, as envelope was badly ripped). I finished my last extant ring book yesterday, so I will get straight on with this.
I thought this was an excellent book. The story was both captivating and moving and showed how particular moments can define us, while the kite competition that formed the narrative centre of the story was aptly metaphorical. I also found The Kite Runner to be very educational - it showed me how limited my knowledge of Afghanistan and its recent history is and how little I know beyond information culled from news reports.
WIll put this in the post to AnglersRest later today.

Arrived in the post today from UrbanSpaceman. Thanks.
I have just finished a ring and have one more in front, but will get to this ASAP.

Just finished the last ring (Italian Edication by Tim Parks - great book!) and I am just starting this one.
A moving story, which increased my knowledge of Afghanistan.
To be posted off to adrienne10 in the USA on 4th July.

Beautiful Book, I know it was a fictional story but being set around true events you get so involved in the story and yes I cried too.
I've PM'd Vespa for her address and will post on ASAP

This arrived with perfect timing this morning as I had just finished my last book, so I will get started on it straight away.
Wow what can I say!! A haunting story full of betrayal and regret. I think this is one of those books that I will not forget and I will probably return to in the future.
I will post this on to Purplerosebud in the morning.

What a moving story, beautifully written. An excellent book that has shown me how little I know of the history of Afghanistan.
Thank you for sharing. I will be sending it on Spike1972 asap.

I'm less than 100 pages into this book, but I already have a feeling it's going to be really good.
I hope I'm right.
I hope I'm right.
Wow, this book has everything. Betrayel, friendship, jealousy, love, respect, and any number of other emotions you can think of.
This author is very good at descriptive writing (I'm sure there's a posh word for that..), and I found it easy to picture a lot of the places and people in my mind's eye.
I agee with UrbanSpaceman in that it's very educational and made me realise how little I knew about Afghanistand and its people, aside from what we see in the media.
One of the few books I've given a 9/10, but it definitely deserves it.
I'll try to get this in the post to DazzyGidds sometime next week.

Humble apologies, humble apologies,
It took me ages to finish this book but when i did get going it brought tears to my eyes. I felt the pain and anguish of guilt and unswavering loyalty, the need to do the right thing, the backdrop of Afghanistan, still in the news, still unresolved conflicts. For me, the explanation of the situation in Afghanistan was only the background to the characters, after all it is an extremely complicated situation.
I will send onto Calalilly, Waterlooville. I have the book, i have the box. I just need to send it now.

I`ve obviously had this book a long time, but it finally reached the top of the mountain. Its not untill i went to add my journal entry that i realised what a journey this book has made in its short life.
I don`t understand how i came to pick it up at the Notts meet when 3 days previously it was destined for Waterlooville though!
All that aside....i can`t add anything about this book that hasn`t been said by other journallers!I really loved this one and yes,i cried too!
Excellent stuff.

Thank you so much for sending this to me.I have a huge TBR pile and usually pick a book at random lol,
but after reading all the reviews and seeing it is such a well travelled book I feel it deserves to be bumped to the top of the pile so as to get it moving again in the not too distant future!
Thanks again :)
