In the heart of summer, in the dead of night, something wakes you. The house is quiet. The children are sleeping. The kitchen is empty.
Except for the body on the floor.

A series of brutal home invasions is terrorizing the Peak District. Until now, the burglars haven't left a clue. This time, they've left a corpse. But as the death toll rises, two intrepid cops begin to suspect that the robberies - and the murders - are not what they seem. Beneath the scorching summer sun, a dangerous game is in play . . . and a merciless killer is hiding in plain sight.

Received in Crime bookbox when it returned home.

Although I know of this author it is not someone I've read. Since this has 'fallen' into my hands I think I will do so before it goes on another journey.

Interesting, I did not think I had read any by this author but indeed I have - and it was later in the series than this!

Synopsis.
"In their most gripping, relentlessly suspenseful case ever, Detective Constable Ben Cooper and Detective Sergeant Diane Fry investigate a series of terrifying and lethal home invasions in the Peak District. After Cooper's brother shoots a burglar, Fry takes the reins, and Cooper must watch his rival pursue the case to its bitter end, even as he unearths evidence linking the crimes to the nearby city of Sheffield."

For me, this was something of a slow burner but was as indicated above 'gripping'. I got a real sense of the countryside described and the walks and climbs around the area described too. The characters were rounded where they required to be and more vaguely sketched peripherally yet still distinguishable. I had worked out much of the plotline before it got there, but not it all the nuances, so there was still some surprises.

The several strands of different stories throughout the book were quite intricate and I know that the family background theme is carried out throughout the series but I am not sure that I wish to go back and read the whole series in sequence. However, that is not to say that I would not read another by this author because I clearly would!

I have no firm plan for this at the moment but have something in mind which may yet happen. Meanwhile I will put it on available.

Quite enjoyed this crime story set in the heart of the Peak District. Its landscape and nature play a very important role in its setting and I really felt like I was there. The characters were quite realistic too and it was just a shame for me that I didn't know anything about their previous history from previous novels so I might have to look out for number 1 on this series,
