I haven't read this one yet, but was fortunate enough to pick up two pristine copies from a charity sale - one for me and one to share with my BC friends!
I intend on reading this one soon because I am a bit of a sucker for military sci-fi, even though I hate military stuff set in the real world. Two of my favorites within this sub-genre of sci-fi are Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card and Midshipman's Hope by David Feintuch - VERY good stuff. And how can I resist the fact the main character is a girl with a telepathic cat!! Cool! ;-)

On Basilisk Station (or "HH1" as it's known to the faithful) is the first installment in David Weber's cult hit Honor Harrington series, which has charmed the socks off schoolgirls and sailors alike. Honor--the heroine of this fast-paced, addictive space opera--is a polished, plucky bulldog of a naval officer, part Horatio Hornblower, part Miles Vorkosigan, part Captain Janeway, and with a razor-clawed telepathic cat thrown over her shoulder for good measure.
The series' kickoff puts a giddy Commander Harrington at the helm of her first serious starship, the HMS Fearless. But her excitement quickly fades--political maneuvering by top brass in the Manticoran navy has left her light cruiser outfitted with a half-baked experimental weapons system. Against all odds (just the way Honor likes it), she still manages a clever coup in tactical war games, a feat that earns her accolades--and enemies. The politicians she's offended banish her to a galactic backwater, Basilisk Station. But that outpost soon proves to be a powder keg, and it's up to Harrington and the Fearless crew to thwart the aggressive plans of the Haven Republic. A perfect mix of military SF and high adventure--if you enjoy your tour, re-up with HH2, The Honor of the Queen. --Paul Hughes --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Thanks for sending this - I've read some David Weber, but I don't think I've read this one yet (although I may have some Honor Harrington on my TBR list).

One of my choices from JudySlump612's Superluminal VBB.

I'm like Minerva101: I love this sort of thing, even though I'm very definitely a civilian (of course, growing up watching Star Trek reruns probably didn't hurt). I enjoyed this a lot and will be investigating the other Honor Harrington books buried in Mt. TBR.

Thanks for sharing; I may offer this back to the VBB.

oops. Thought I'd got all the books (that came home) journalled, but see I missed this one. Lo siento.

Have I read another in this series? the shipboard telepathic cat sounds familiar....

I don't know yet whether I'll keep this to read, or pass it on, so someone else can enjoy it ('cause it would be quite a while, and likely boxed up for months at least before I get to it).

Holy Cow I've had this a long time! And it took me till this Spring to read it; embarrassing....even with the female protagonist and the telepathic cat, the cover art and back cover blurb were a turn-off. I kept picking it up and putting it back to read something else. A great example of why not to judge a book by it's cover! Once I did finally start reading, I couldn't stop~ totally caught up by Honor and in her world :D

I'm now going to offer this in booklady's ABC VBB.

I'm claiming this from the SF bookbox.

Later: Is it wrong of me that the first thing I did was skim to the end of the book to make sure nothing awful happened to the treecat Nimitz? {wry grin}

While he does survive, he wasn't as much a presence in the story as I'd hoped from the cover (yeah, don't trust those covers!). It was certainly a lively story, with space-battles and betrayals and mass casualties and heroic deeds - and a really satisfying conclusion!

[There's a TV Tropes page on the "Honor Harrington" series.]

Dropping more books at one of the EIGHT new Little Free Libraries are being installed in Nashua. Hope the finder enjoys the book!
