I bought this nice hardback from my monthly book club (bomc.com). I have not read it and it looks like my TBR pile is getting larger by the second so I decided to send this book on a journey while I catch up. I am starting a bookray and somewhere along the way I'd like the book back to read and then pass on again.

What’s a bookray and how does it work?

A bookray is when a book passes from person to person based on the list of members involved. Preferably a bookray book is never released into the wild.

To join this bookray (or any other bookray of mine) please private message me. I will be glad to add you to the list. New members are added all of the time so be sure to check the list of participants before you mail the book to the next in line just in case!

Once you are a bookray member you will receive the book from the person listed before you. When you receive the book please make a journal entry stating that you’ve received it. Then read it as soon as you can (no absolute hurry, just be reasonable please :o), and journal again with your thoughts. You’ll then need to private message the person on the list after you for their address. Mail the book by media mail (it’s cheaper!), and make release notes on the book only if you’d like to. Then sit back and watch the continuing journey!

The members are as follows:

kristamd (Maryland) (journaled)
salemhouse (Minnesota)(journaled)
txcajun (Texas)(journaled)
cestmoi (Canada) (journaled)
MissQ (Canada) (journaled)
sejent

A progress update...I started the book this weekend and have now read about 90 pages. It took me a while before I understood that the setting was modern-day -- I'm not sure if it was the old-fashioned suitcase pictured on the cover, or the fact that the main character is engaged to a high school sweetheart and loves to sew her own clothes, but something gave me the impression that the book was set in the 1950s. I was quite surprised when a reference to gangsta rap jumped off the page! So far, I'm enjoying the book a lot. It's contemplative, but not too slow-paced. I wonder how others would respond in Carrie's situation -- just as her relationship with her fiance seems to be fizzling, a horrible accident renders him paralyzed. I'll post more as I read more.

I zipped through the rest of the book, thanks in part to my students testing this week, giving me some down time, and thanks in part to a fascinating story. Packer writes beautifully -- I hope she follows up with another book soon. It would be easy to condemn a person for making some of the choices Carrie does, but Packer makes her such a likeable, real character that it's impossible not to sympathize with her. Setting is also evoked wonderfully, both Wisconsin and New York. I'm curious what others will think of the ending! The book will be mailed to participant #2 during my next post office excursion, this week sometime.

Mailed to salemshouse in Minnesota this morning!

Journal Entry 7 by salemhouse on Wednesday, May 14, 2003
Received in the mail today - this will be the next book I read. I first saw this book at Barnes & Noble. I'm not sure what caught my eye, but, being too cheap to actually purchase it at full price, I duly noted it in my palm pilot wish list, to be searched for at the library or used book store. I was so glad to see pgsahm offer it for a bookray, and am looking forward to reading it.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were so well written that I felt myself going through a variety of feelings with and about them, from sorrow and admiration to frustration. I couldn't wait to get to the end. Shipping to txcajun today.

Journal Entry 9 by txcajun from Carrollton, Texas USA on Tuesday, May 27, 2003
Okay....I've got it!! This is one I've wanted to read for a while, but restrained myself from even looking for a copy since I knew I was participating in the bookring. Will read and ship on shortly.

I really enjoyed this book. The battles that rage within the characters as events surround them seemed very real and in now way beyond imagination. Several times I had to stop and think what I would do in the situation -- what would my reaction be. I wish the mother would have been developed a little more since I think the haven she provides to the protagonist is a turning point in the thought process of the plot. A GREAT read!

Sending on today!

Just received in the mail and I see MissQ is after me in the ring..well that works out perfect as I will be seeing MissQ in the flesh this Saturday..so I'll get busy reading so she can have it asap and save myself the ridiculous postage to mail within my own country!
I'll journal again and thanks for setting this up!

I'm about a third of the way through. This novel is extremely well written. Carrie's feelings are so well described that I am changing my mind about how *I* feel about her every time I turn the page based on what she's feeling about the situation she's found herself in.

Stu's character is endearing and lovable and even the descriptions of "the mothers" is
crystal clear.

Well..must return to the book so that I can hand it off to MissQ on Saturday!

Journal Entry 13 by wingcestmoiwing from Hamilton, Ontario Canada on Thursday, June 26, 2003
Just finished this a few minutes ago. Carrie really had such a struggle with her feelings throughout the novel and I felt like the ending was really a new beginning and Carrie (and the reader) were left with no idea of where she would end up.
I would have liked a more "closed" ending but the story was well told and full of compassion and life's lessons.

I also spent time wondering what I would do in her shoes, at her age, with her experiences...where would my heart have taken me? And would my head have let me go there...

Thanks for sharing this and I'll be giving it to MissQ on Saturday.

Journal Entry 14 by MissQ from Fredericton, New Brunswick Canada on Saturday, June 28, 2003
Got this today from cestmoi before our book shopping trip during my visit to Toronto. How convient, now I don't have to wait for it to come on the mail! I've been looking forward to it and will read it right away.

Journal Entry 15 by MissQ from Fredericton, New Brunswick Canada on Thursday, July 10, 2003
I finished this off last night. A very good story! I hated the main character, Carrie, for the most part though. It reminded me of the reaction I had to the characters in The House of Sand and Fog. I guess I just didn't agree with the decisions she made and she seemed kind of cold. It hard to know though how I would react in the same situation. I started to warm to her a little by the end. Overall I did enjoy the book.

Journal Entry 16 by woodsroy from Dieppe, New Brunswick Canada on Sunday, July 13, 2003
Got this a couple days ago from MissQ. Thank you for letting me sneak in the bookray like that. :-)

I started reading it, and it looks very promising. I'll write more once I'm done.

Journal Entry 17 by woodsroy from Dieppe, New Brunswick Canada on Tuesday, July 22, 2003
I really enjoyed reading about Carrie and her "decisions". I completely related to her need to escape what everyone expects you to do, say, etc. and just leave so you can find out who you really are, what you really like, enjoy, love. I would definitely recommend this book to all my friends.

* spoiler - I do think that her decision to "end" it was a bit easier since he (and others) knew about it before the accident. The accident simply made it happen faster, but it was inevitable.

A bookray I'd forgotten about! I've got two ahead of this one in my queue... I'll read it, post my thoughts and send it on its way as quickly as I possibly can. Thanks for sharing a hard cover book pgsahm!

Journal Entry 25 by wingdjf1968wing from San Ramon, California USA on Thursday, May 20, 2004
A high school English teacher once told me that the mark of a well-developed literary hero/heroine was that character's ability to instill a range of conflicting emotions in the reader. Carrie Bell did that for me. I loved her. I hated her. I felt sorry for her. I was angry with her. I wanted to smack her, and hug her all at the same time.

Thank you so much for sharing... it's on it's way to the next reader on the list shortly!

This arrived in the mail yesterday. Just now had a chance to sit down and journal it. I can’t wait to start on this book. Is it wrong of me to hope I have a bad night so I can stay up and read this all? Yea, it probably is not the smartest thing to wish for right now. :)

Love the postcard, JDT. I need to get up there myself sometime. Maybe next year my husband and I will make it up to Victoria. It really is not that far away. I had to scan it to share it, it is just too pretty.
