Okay, the writing needs a little refinement - even for the age group. I know these are meant for 12 year olds, but the writing is very crude and choppy. It's easy reading, but it's not smooth reading.

And I don't want to spoil anything, but oh my god I hate white people after reading this book. And I am a white people. Why is it that people seem to think that their way is right and whatever way anyone else uses can't possibly be right for anyone else? Okay, whatever we have going on worked for us. But the Yup'ik Indians' way of life worked for them and some idiot missionaries decided that the people were evil and had to be civilised. Yeah. And that helped alot. I swear, I hate people sometimes, and this was no exception. I hope the other books don't anger me as much as this one did, but oh man was I hot after reading this one. Too bad man will never learn that our system works for us, and the systems of other cultures work for the other cultures?
After chapter 16, I wanted to kick Mr. Hoff's ass myself.

I've written all the Yup'ik words from the back of the book down, and I am going to actually try to memorise them, although I have no idea if that will happen or not, but we'll see.
Since I can't afford to mail this out right now, I'll make my grandmother read it and maybe she'll see my point of view, although I don't know.. I think she's more on the side of the Hoff's... Anyway, give it about a week, and this should be out and on it's way to the next person in the ring.

I really liked this book. I especially loved all the details the author included about the Yup'ik culture, and how she described the children's reactions to the missionaries and their culture. I didn't expect the book to be so sad, so fair warning to everyone reading after me--have some tissues nearby!

Sending out to clawdette in Louisiana on Monday, Jan. 12. Enjoy!

Thanks, dangerouswoman3! I'm glad your problems logging on's been fixed!

Update 24th August 2004: Finished this book in less then 2 hours! :D A fast read and an easy one. I agree about the Hoffs' closed-mindedness, not being able to see or accept other cultures and religion. I hate that in people, but we see this in many people even today. I don't think it's something that will ever really disappear. We all think our way is the right way. And of course, our way is the right way, for us, but if we could only accept and respect other people's ways and beliefs, the world would be a much better place. What a tragic story...:~(

as i felt with several other of the girls of many lands books, the writing needed some help, and the story needed some fleshing out. trust me, the age group can handle it. had i been given this book when i was 8 or 9 i would have given it back with a withering glance that it was missing several chapters. stop putting these constraints on the authors and making them produce choppy, unfleshed-out stories! sheesh!

that said, the story itself was enough to make me hate people and western civilization for all time. a wonderful reminder of all the "great advances" white man brought to the "uncivilized" corners of the world. i read this while hiding my white little head under the cover in a new england home, further ashamed and angry and just ... argh! the ending would have really packed a wallop i the author hadn't been under a word-count constraint, i'm sure.

i'm bitterly sad, and yet thankful for the reminder that this book gave in reminding the reader of the loss of so many indigenous cultures over time. i'd traveled to alsaka years ago, but never had the time to explore beyond the russian settlement of the area. now i want to go back and dig deeper and see what those facades are covering up, and what they destroyed. this book only managed to whet my appetite for more reading into the yup'ik culture and others of the american northwest.
