When I read this a few years ago I didn't really get it. Ever since then anyone I have spoken to has loved it, so this copy is for a special mission...

This felt like quite a long read and at some points my interest wandered a little, but overall I really enjoyed the story, the characters were mostly likable, even Vivi (who in some ways I could understand and really feel for - some people aren't natural mothers, but this doesn't make them bad ones) even though the 'incident' happened I don't think that she ever stopped loving her children and I think it was completely beyond her control (which doesn't excuse it in anyway), the ending was right and as it should have been, and Sidda came to understand her mother and the rest of the Ya Yas and even herself from reading the scrapbook. I am going to look out for the other Ya Ya books; 'Little Alters Everywhere' and 'Ya Yas In Bloom', I have also brought the film on DVD to see how it measures up to the book (I didn't realise it had been made into a film)

Book made available, might offer as a Bookray or RABCK

This will be sent to Oedde as soon as I have their address, there doesn't seem to any interest in a bookray at the moment.

Thank you for sending this to me! An American friend of mine once told me that this is a fun read and that's why I requested it. Unfortunately, I won't get to read it for a while on account of my TBR-shelf...

I didn't really get it either.
It was fun, yes, but only about half the time. The other half was predictable, sometimes cheesy. I didn't like how hardly any episode of this story is told in full detail, with all the background and everything that's important about it. The narrator keeps throwing bits and pieces of stories, trying to get the reader interested. That didn't work for me. And the big "revelation" at the end, when Sidda finally finds out some things about her mother isn't really all that surprising, is it? (Well, maybe that's the point; because finally Sidda sees that she doesn't have to understand and know everything to be happy. ?)

This looks like a really good book. I have actually wanted to read this one, even though it's not on my wishlist, so thank you for sending it! Thank you also for the really amazing bookmark that came with it!

I finally read this book, it took me a while to get to it. I am of two minds about this book. I enjoyed reading the bits about Sidda, I liked her character. I didn't like Vivi though, I thought she was a very egocentric woman. It always had to be about her - the friendships, her marriage, her motherhood. I didn't understand her, even though I can understand that some mothers aren't natural mothers and Vivi does acknowledge sometime in the book that she probably shouldn't have had kids, I do think she was a bad mother.
I thought the book was a bit sappy, especially towards the end. I don't understand or subscribe to the whole idea of women as goddesses and girlfriends being closer to each other than husbands and wives. All the Ya-Ya's backed Vivi up as if she was the perfect goddess they all aspired to be, when all she was was a drunk who was very high on herself. Sure, she had a hard childhood with not much love from her parents, but she treated her kids horribly and her friends still berated Sidda for being mad at her mom for treating her so bad. I didn't understand that at all.
