Sometimes I really don't feel like reading fiction. I want well written facts that can expand my field of interests. For this purpose I wish I had more books like this one.
Now a major bookring! Coming to a BC'er near you.
Sent today together with The Boilerplate Rhino to Yubi40 in Switzerland. Happy travelling!

Great! Received it today! Will make comment after reading it and before sending it on!
OK, took me nearly a month to read: although it's a series of essays, it's not that easy to read as you have to take your time, to understand (sometimes just plainly the English vocabulary), to make the necessary connections to other things previously read or heard, and to "digest". The essays are very interesting, shed an interesting light on science and scientists of all Centuries. Surely I will read more of Gould's writings, but not in a short while ... now I need something more easygoing!
Thank you Too-Ticki!

Release planned for Monday, June 23, 2003 at Ufficio postale in Lugano, Ticino Switzerland.
Enjoy the reading Lisa-B! I suppose this will have the "depth" you were missing in Quammen! Like the idea this is my release Nr 100! ;-)

Thanks for the second part of the non-fiction bookring. I have read a few others by Stephen Jay Gould, and therefore I am looking very much forward to this one.
This is the second to last book of essays of Stephen Jay Gould. Sadly, he passed away last year.
This book contains mainly during the first half essays about the French scientists Buffon, Lavoisier and Lamarck, all of them of the late 18th and the 19th century, and also the English scientists Lyell, Darwin, Owen and Wallace of the 19th century.
The second half or so of the book contains shorter essays about more actual themes, however Stephen Jay Gould never does not come back to Natural History & Science and Society, even if the essay is about baseball heros or the Dolly the cloned sheep.
I am mailing the book to Biba98 this week.

Today I received both this book by SJ Gould and a video from a series of TV interviews where he participated, Of Beauty And Consolation, by Wim Kayzer. I will read the book in another three weeks, when I get back from holidays. For now, Jolanda can enjoy the first volume from the bookring, by David Quammen, she just received!

It looked so promising, Stephen Jay Gould and his essays. Nevertheless, I find it could not grab me, no matter how I tried. I will not stall the bookring any longer, this one goes off to Jolanda now.

Yesterday, I've received the book in the mail. Will start reading soon.
Journal Entry 11 by Jolanda from Rotterdam, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Wednesday, December 31, 2003
It took me a long time to finish this book. Although it are essays, they're not exactly easy-reading. I found most essays interesting. I've not read all and picked out the most promising. If I would read the entire book it will take me about a year as I need to take it in, before I can start reading the next essay. It's one of those books I like to have for myself. I will bring this book together with Quammen to the post office soon. The first bookring to post in 2004.
Books arrived today safe and sound...Jolanda, thank you so much for sending these so quickly!
I will start reading them this weekend and come back to journal.

SJ Gould never disappoints me. This was another great read. I'm so happy he left us such a long legacy of books to discover and re-read any time!
As much as enjoyed Quammen, my heart still belongs to SJG.
Too-Ticki, thank you so very much for sharing these wonderful books with all of us. This has been one of my all-time favorite bookrings!
Sending to AmberLee17 next!

Came home last evening and this book and it's companion were sitting on my doorstep. Looks good. It's close to the top of Mt. TBR.
As with the companion volume, I enjoyed this series of essays very much. I've checked another in this series out of the library, so will continue enjoying the experience.
Thank you, Too-Ticki, for setting this double ring up!

And now home after more than a year of travelling, shared book is double book (or something). Thanks everyone!
