Erika Kohut teaches piano at the Vienna Conservatory by day. But by night she trawls the porn shows of Vienna while her mother, whom she loves and hates in equal measure, waits up for her.

Into this emotional pressure-cooker bounds music student and ladies' man, Walter Klemmer. With Walter as her student, Erika spirals out of control, consumed by the ecstasy of self-destruction.

I could not finish this book. I never quit on a book but this one frustrated me to no end. To me this was just a hodge podge of words that made no sense. It could possibly be because this was a translated book. Whatever, I could not bring myself to be tortured anymore. ***Potential Spoiler*** What I was able to gather from the 100 pages that I read, this book was about an Austrian girl named Erica. She was a piano teacher. She was totally ruled by her mother. This dominance made her severely dysfunctional when it came to other relationships outside her personal jail. I know one of her students has a crush on her and she is trying to avoid him. That’s as far as I got. I will say, there are some sentences in this book that halted my eyes because they were a creative formation of words. That’s about the only good thing I can say about this.

I feel like I failed the "readers code" by not finishing a book. Normally I plod through them no matter how hard it is. I just didn't have the energy for this.
Sorry....
I have the WanderingB's address and will send out today.
Thank you for including me!

Received in today's post. Thanks to shnedwards for sharing and accountkel for sending it to me. Sounds like one that will take awhile to read - but it will knock one more off my 1001 books you need to read list!

I have PM'd Cat207 for a mailing address. I am glad I got the opportunity to read this, but I did not enjoy it at all. The emotional drama I could tolerate - I just do not care for the writing style. I know this is the syle Nobel Prize winners usually adopt, but I don't care for it as I find it more difficult to wade through.

Arrived in today's mail. Thank you shnedwards, and Wandering-B. The post card is beautiful. I have been on the Jumbo Floating Restaurant, but it was 25 years ago!

Not an easy read. Some very weird relationships!

I haven't had a response from taniazed, and her bookshelf still says to skip her for the time being, so I'll get this in the mail to stubee and KT-J.

Journal Entry 13 by stubee from Bury, Greater Manchester United Kingdom on Monday, April 6, 2009
Thanks Cat207 this arrived unexpectedly but it was a nice surprise. Thanks once again shnedwards for another 1001 bookray! - We're expecting another three bookrings to arrive in the next few days but we'll be as quick as we can with this one.

EDIT: 17 April - Finished while on a chill out holiday on Lake Como. A perverse look a the life of a lonely talented women who is restricted in her life experiences by a mother who shelters her from the real world.

Thanks Shnedwards; I've passed this onto KT-J.

NEXT: Frank Schätzing - The Swarm

Journal Entry 14 by KT-J on Monday, April 20, 2009
Thanks Stubee, I'll be starting this shortly!

I'm not sure what to say about this - I really didn't enjoy reading it and think I struggled towards the end. It's quite a sad book in a way as I think I had some sypathy with all the characters at some point, although I found them all immensely insidious and didn't like any of them!

I found the style of writing slightly challenging as it seemed to veer off into strange metaphors but it was elegantly written and very descriptive.

Overall, one to cross off the 1001 list but not something I'd read again! Thanks shnedwards for sharing this, I've posted it on to cally-c today.

Arrived this morning! Will read as soon as poss.

Very difficult book to read, very claustrophobic. It's not easy to read about such dysfunctional relationships, I went from sympathising with the daughter, to sympathising with the mother, while disliking them both. I did enjoy the actual writing, it's very poetic in places.

The Postwoman has just delivered this book. Thank you for sending this to me.
It looks like people have struggled with this a bit but I look forward to giving it a go.

Its quite a sad unresolved tale where in the end no-one really gets what they actually want in life! The style of writing does go on for quite a long time pounding home how bad the situation is by giving you different examples, but with each instance saying the same thing.

All that said, I did actually enjoy reading it. I enjoyed the story (if you can enjoy such a story!). I think because I had heard how hard a book it was to read I had prepared myself. I liked the Psychology involved in each of the the characters and their relationships and could understand how and why each person reacted to everyone else and to themselves personally they way they did.

I don't think I will ever read it again but I am glad that I have.
