Athènes, 1998. Yannis Loukas, journaliste freelance pour des magazines de décoration, en a assez de son métier et de sa vie amoureuse. Fils d'un célèbre écrivain, c'est un passionné de littérature. D'ailleurs, il a promis de faire éditer l'autobiographie de son père. En fouillant dans les archives de celui-ci, il découvre le manuscrit d'un roman intitulé Bar Flaubert, texte qu'un certain Loukas Mattheou a envoyé à son père en 1975. Le roman raconte une histoire d'amour entre le narrateur et une femme dénommée Léto. Yannis, captivé, décide de partir à la recherche des protagonistes. C'est ainsi qu'il se retrouve au cœur de la Beat Generation des années 1950-1960 à New York (Ginsberg, Kerouac, Burroughs...). Menée à un rythme trépidant, sa quête l'entraîne aux frontières de la fiction et de la réalité, à travers toute l'Europe. Au hasard de ses rencontres et d'une passion amoureuse, il va devoir s'interroger sur sa propre identité.
