Picked this up last year when The Warehouse had one of their import book sales on.

Hello Sailor!... looks at what being gay at sea meant for men of the British Merchant Navy in post-war Britian, at a time when being gay ashore lead to blackmail, arrests and strife.

There's chapters about the secret language of Polari, drag queens on the high seas, what happened on shore leave, why would gay men join these ships in the first place and what made them leave.
There's also an appendix of marine terms, good for people such as myself who know very little about ships and the social standings aboard.

There's also a lot of photographs and illustrations featured.

While it took me a little bit to get into this book (partly due to the 'academic' way it is written, most of the non-fiction I read has more of a personal point of view) on the whole I found it very interesting.

Passing this on to a friend next who might be able to use some of the information in this book for her school research project.

This wasn't picked up from the BookCrossing stall so passing it on to a friend.

When a friend came over to visit she had a look through my boxes of available books. This was one of the books she chose.
