Duma Key: A Novel

From the back of the book:
"A terrible construction site accident takes Edgar Freemantle's right arm and scrambles his memory and his mind, leaving him with little but rage as he begins the ordeal of rehabilitation. A marriage that produced two lovely daughters suddenly ends, and Edgar begins to wish he hadn't survived the injuries that could have killed him. He wants out. His psychologist, Dr. Kamen, suggests a "geographic cure," a new life distant from the Twin Cities and the building business Edgar grew from scratch.
Edgar leaves Minnesota for a rented house on Duma Key, a stunningly beautiful, eerily undeveloped splinter of the Florida coast. The sun setting into the Gulf of Mexico and the tidal rattling of shells on the beach call out to him, and Edgar draws. A visit from Ilse, the daughter he dotes on, starts his movement out of solitude. He meets a kindred spirit in Wireman, a man reluctant to reveal his own wounds, and then Elizabeth Eastlake, a sick old woman whose roots are tangled deep in Duma Key. Now Edgar paints, sometimes feverishly, his exploding talent both a wonder and a weapon. Many of his paintings have a power that cannot be controlled. When Elizabeth's past unfolds and the ghosts of her childhood begin to appear, the damage of which they are capable is truly devastating.
The tenacity of love, the perils of creativity, the mysteries of memory and the nature of the supernatural -- Stephen King gives us a novel as fascinating as it is gripping and terrifying."

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
This book is off to innae in Colorado for a bookray. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did.
As I don't want to accidently spoil it for anyone...please highlight below to see what I thought. . . .
I have been reading Stephen King novels since I picked up my mom's copy of Night Shift and read it at the same time she did. I truly love his writing. Although lately...something has been lacking. His novels just haven't had that "magic" that could make me stay up when I was tired, just to read another chapter...or finish the book! With this book, the Stephen I like to read is back!!!
In fact, I think it has more chills than some of his other "supernatural" books. This one was almost back to horror, only it had a purpose to the horror. I am specifically thinking of when Edgar is trying to dispel the nightmares, and is turning on lights -- wants to make a phone call -- and when he turns on the kitchen light! OMG!! it's a "ghost" with a handcuff waiting for him!! I jumped. Who jumps when they read a book??? Thank you Stephen for coming back to us....Constant Reader missed you.
I happen to have a second copy of this book (a friend gave it to me just after Ladybug told me the ring was on the way) and I will be passing it around to my friends, because...the KING is back.
I have nightraine's address and will be sending this out soon!
ED: Mailed out via Media Mail this morning (March 5, 2008) :-)
This was classic King. The last couple of books I read of his I have been disappointed with. However, this was truly old style King and I really enjoyed it. Thanks ladybug74 for sharing. It is on it's way to liz-z. Enjoy!
I will start this as soon as I am finished with the book I am currently reading.
As far as my review of the book, I thought it mediocre. It was an ok story, a bit long, a bit of non-sense and overall not the Stephen King that I loved when I was in high school. Maybe I have just outgrown his style of writing but I don't think that his books are what they used to be and maybe they never will be again. I really wanted to love this book but just couldn't.

I hope it's just delayed and not lost...
The front cover is pretty tame for Stephen King..but the back cover is suitably bizarre.
I need to finish my current book first, but this is going on the *top* of the TBR stack so it will be next.
Oh, by the way, I'm hanging on to the box it came in so I'm prepared when it's time to send the book on to the next reader. :)
Also - note to future readers - don't be alarmed, the white stuff is just baking soda. I'll do my best to get as much of it out as I can, but in order to read this book I need to try to reduce the smoky smell (or it will give me a major headache).
Hoping to start this in the next couple of days - I don't have to work on Friday (state holiday) so I'm planning to make a big dent in this book then. :)
I haven't read much Stephen King recently (I think the last one I read was Hearts in Atlantis) but once I got started this went pretty fast - it sucked me in and didn't want to let me go! When I went to the art supply store for the binding supplies they had the cutest tiny canvases (maybe 2"x3") and itty bitty easels to match. I can't even draw, let alone paint, but the satisfaction it gave Edgar made me wish I could...or maybe not, after all! ;)
The story also made me think of Larry Niven's Gil Hamilton (aka Gil the Arm); if you've read those stories you'll know why.
Although I don't know much about book binding, I *think* I've managed to securely re-attach the pages to the cover, and most of the smell is gone. Hopefully the book will be ok for the rest of the readers on the list.
I see that I'm just about in the middle, so that's not a bad place for a short vacation, right? ;)
I appreciate everyone's patience. I've got jsmeltser's address and will be sending this out at the beginning of the week.
Mailing to jsmeltser, probably Monday 8/25.
Here's an audio version on my shelf.

once again, King has managed to take his skills and pull me into a world that should be totally unbelievable, but as seen through his eyes is not. introduces us to his fully believable characters, lets us grow to know and care about them and then takes us on a supernatural, crazy Mr. Toad's Wild Ride (ha! those of you who have read the book get the references i'm sure and those who will soon will understand).
my only quarrel with this one is the liberties King took with the geography of the west coast of florida. probably not a distraction for the occassional visitor of someone who knows little about the area, but to one such as me who is a florida born and bred girl, it was a mite distracting.
be that as it may, a thoroughly enjoyable read and perfect timing as it definitely has helped me completely unplug from my job (which i hate, and my boss who tells me every day how she is doing all the work and i am nothing, all the while slinging and lobbing the scut jobs over the cube wall for me to dig through and her to take credit on)
thanks for sharing. Rrrcaron has been PMed for address and the book will wing it's way to NH sometime next week after i've received that info.
