Sexing the Cherry
13 journalers for this copy...
I am not sure how to even describe this book. It is a mix of different things: fairy tale, history, and who knows what else. It left me with the overall impression that the author definitely has some issues...
I didn't love it, but for once - I didn't hate a book on the 1001 list.

16.3. I finished the book yesterday. Even it wasn't that long, I just didn't have to sit down and read it for long periods of time. Some one earlier was trying to find right word to decribe the book, and in my opinion historical fantasy might be something rather close what the book was about.
When I first started reading the book, it turned out to be rather hard to figure out. I thought it was because I was reading it in English, not in my native language. But then I peeked what others had written about the book earlier, and I noticed I certainly wasn't the only one. I don't know quite what to say about the book. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. Even "like" would be too strong word. At least the story was rather short, as if it had been something like 300 pages, I'm quite sure I wouldn't have finished it. I wonder what were the reasonings why this book was chosen to 1001 list? It left me rather puzzled and wondering what the author was after when she wrote it.
I mailed the book to rapturina earlier today.
I have CaterinaAnna's address and will send the book on sometime this week.
Due to start Amsterdam this evening, this is next up after it, so it should be on its way fairly soon.
I wasn't sure I was going to like this one, given the comments above and my vague memories of Oranges ... being a bit of a rant. However I enjoyed the interweaving of the journeys, the fantastic and historical. It was easy and stimulating to read, with lots of ideas as well as lots of stories. My favourite ideas were those of the city that has to be cleansed of words on pages 11-13 and an internal rate of conductivity determining how we experience time (100-101), but maybe the latter is just the physicist in me.
Thank you ChiBoiler and those who have helped the book on its way to me.
I have ekandra's address from another recent ring, so I'll get this on its way to her in my next parcelling session.

I could not get into this author's writing style. I did try. A few times actually but just could not get it. It now goes to Briz Cowgirl to see if she can make heads or tails of this book.
Readerofmany would like to read this too, so I will be posting it to her shortly. Thanks Shelly-Sparkles for sending it to me!
Sending this copy along to readerofmany, hope you enjoy it!
I was attracted to the title which was explained in the book in gardening terms. I found Sexing the Cherry both disturbing and yet so mesmerising as to stop me from putting it down for long. I will probably release it at the local business centre unless I have a request for it beforehand.
I am releasing this book today at the business centre to be picked up and read by another reader. Enjoy!
